1865 Gold Dollar. MS-62 (PCGS). The final year of the Civil War witnessed a delivery of just 3,725 circulation strike gold dollars in the Philadelphia Mint. Gold did not actively circulate in the Eastern states at that time, and most 1865 gold dollars were almost certainly destroyed through hoarding and melting. Today, the issue is similar in overall rarity to the 1864 and ranks just behind the highly elusive 1863. Satin to semi prooflike in finish, this delightful BU also sports razor sharp devices and vivid yellow gold patina. Minimally marked surfaces reveal no individually distracting abrasions.
