- For collectors who prefer coins that actually circulated, as intended, this lightly worn 1836 Gobrecht dollar represents a significant find and fleeting bidding opportunity. It is a generally bright silver piece with wisps of pale sandy-gold tinting evident as the surfaces rotate under a light. Wispy handling marks are noted, as is light hairlining from an old cleaning. When pursuing Gobrecht dollars - especially examples that actually circulated - it is important to remember that these early silver dollar issues did not benefit from the expert care that would become commonplace later in the 19th and throughout the 20th centuries. When most Gobrecht dollars were taken from circulation in the late 1850s, numismatics in the United States was only in its infancy. Many examples were set aside by novice collectors or, more commonly, bankers and bullion brokers. Hairlines and other signs of careless handling are common, and a good number of 1836s are outright impaired due to harsh cleaning, surface and/or edge damage. (Circulated 1839s are even more difficult to find "nice" as virtually all known survivors of this very rare issue are heavily impaired.) With generally sharp definition and appreciable remnants of the modestly semi-reflective finish, this is an above average example at the assigned grade level. Since the Judd-60 Original in Die Alignment I with the eagle flying "onward and upward" is widely regarded as the quintessential Gobrecht dollar, the significance of this coin for type purposes is obvious. DTS Die State A.
