- 1838 Pattern Liberty Seated Half Dollar. Judd-79a, Pollock-86. Rarity-7-. Proof-61 (PCGS). Iridescent electric blue, rose and gold toning are the predominant feature of this crisply struck, reflective early U.S. Mint pattern. Given the sometimes controversial nature of early Proofs and Specimen strikings, it is interesting to note that by the 1830s the Mint could produce a good-looking and high quality Proof coin, as here. The obverse is the well executed Liberty Seated design that graced our nation's coinage for the next 5 decades, while the reverse is a rather unsuccessful adaption of the Gobrecht Dollar reverse--we should be glad that this design was not selected for general production! Given the wanton proliferation of patterns from the late 1850s to the late 1870s, an interesting, focused collection could be of patterns struck before then. One could embark on that journey on auction night with the acquisition of this lovely quality specimen of Judd 79a.
