- Tompkins Die Stage 3/5, Rea et al. Die State d. Tompkins and Rea et al. Plate Coin. Softly frosted luster flows beneath light toning in dominant silver gray, both sides also with iridescent undertones of reddish-apricot and powder blue. Strike detail is commensurate with the advanced die state, the centers soft, but the impression is nicely centered and both sides are boldly to sharply defined toward the peripheries. A few well scattered circulation marks are present, as expected for the assigned grade, but none are worthy of undue concern. Pleasingly smooth during in-hand viewing, in fact, this is an especially nice Draped Bust quarter at the certified Choice AU level.
Quarter dollar coinage continued to increase in 1806, during which calendar year the Mint delivered 206,124 coins in fulfillment of four warrants. This sizeable (for the era) mintage required six obverse and eight reverse dies in 10 pairings. The 1806 Browning-2 shares its obverse with the issue's B-3, while the reverse is unique to this pairing. It numbers among the most readily obtainable varieties for both the issue and the type, although the very late die state represented here is "very scarce," per Steve Tompkins (2008). Similarly, the authors of the 2010 Rea et al. reference describe this as, "A very difficult die state to locate." The Tompkins specimen is included in the census in the latter reference, where it is ranked CC#6 for the 1806 Browning-2 die variety.
Steve M. Tompkins Commentary: The latest die stage known showing all the cracks and rim cuds that developed during the life of this reverse die. Acquired from Mike Clark, as were several other coins, an old friend and fellow quarter collector/competitor. Neat coin!
