- 1889 Liberty Quarter Eagle. Proof-66 Cameo (NGC). CAC. For unknown reasons, proof Quarter Eagle production in the Philadelphia Mint dipped to just 48 coins in 1889. (By way of comparison, the 1888 has a mintage of 97 pieces and the 1890 was produced to the extent of 93 examples.) One of perhaps only 35 coins extant, this proof 1889 is an extraordinary Gem with radiant yellow-gold color to fully impressed, razor-sharp features. Cameo contrast is marked and bold, especially on the reverse, and the surfaces are free of worrisome handling. With no Deep Cameo examples graded above Proof-65 at PCGS, and no Ultra Cameo coins known to NGC, this PF 66 CAMEO ranks as one of the two finest-certified survivors of this important 1880s proof Quarter Eagle rarity.
What appears to be a scratch in the image of this coin on the reverse over the eagle's right (facing) wing is actually a scratch on the back of the NGC holder.
