- Tompkins Die Stage 1/1, Rea et al. Die State P. Dusky pewter gray surfaces also reveal glints of champagne-gold undertoning as the coin rotates under a light. Softly struck in a few areas, most noticeably around the obverse periphery where the stars lack centrils, although freedom from all but light wear leaves plenty of bold to sharp detail at the focal features. Some softly frosted luster persists, and there are no mentionable marks apart from a shallow obverse scrape curving around the bottom of star 3.
This is the common die marriage of the 1822 quarter, although with only 64,080 coins delivered during that calendar year, this is a key date Capped Bust issue that is rated as scarce in numismatic circles. The Browning-1 shares its obverse die with the legendary 1822 B-2 25/50 C. variety (see below, following lot), but the former is readily attributable by its unique reverse die with normal 25 C. denomination.
Steve M. Tompkins Commentary: The 1822 as an issue is really underrated, especially in grades of EF and above. As you can see, I never upgraded this coin over a course of nearly 15 years. Not that a few higher grade pieces didn't show up, but most did not have the nice golden appearance of the example offered here.
