- 1849-C Liberty Head Half Eagle. Winter-1. Die State II. MS-60 (PCGS). CAC.
Satiny olive-gold surfaces display tinges of intermingled rose-orange color under a light. Faintly reflective in the fields, both sides are enhanced by a sharp strike that wanes minimally only at isolated central high points. As one of the more frequently encountered Charlotte Mint half eagles the 1849-C is an ideal candidate for a mintmarked type set. However, the 1849-C is rarer than the 1852-C and 1858-C in high grades such as AU and Mint State. In the latter category this issue is rare by any measure, with an extant population of only 10 to 15 pieces (per Doug Winter, 2018). Prior to this sale we had not offered an Uncirculated 1849-C in more than a decade, a fact that speaks to the conditionally challenging nature of this issue with a deceptively high (for the era) mintage of 64,823 pieces. A highlight of the present Fairmont Collection sale, and destined for similar status in another advanced Liberty Head gold cabinet.
Provenance: From the Fairmont Collection-Hendricks Set.
PCGS Population: 2; 15 finer (MS-64 finest). CAC Population: just 8 in all Mint State grades, which total includes examples certified by both PCGS and NGC.
PCGS# 8241. NGC ID: 25TW.
