- 1932 United States Assay Commission Medal. Bronze. 51 mm. By John R. Sinnock and Adam Pietz. JK AC-76Aa, Baker A-348. Rarity-4. Obverse Unsigned. MS-62 (NGC).
This mostly deep golden-bronze example has swirls of olive-gray scattered about on the obverse and, to a far lesser extent, reverse. Free of detracting marks and close to Choice quality.
One of the more popular Assay Commission medals, the obverse design of the 1932 was prepared in commemoration of the bicentennial of George Washington's birth in 1732. Only 25 bronze impressions were produced, all of which were delivered on February 17 of that year. Also known by the attribution of Baker A-348, this type is eagerly sought by Assay Commission medal specialists and collectors of Washingtoniana. The variant with the obverse die signed J.R. SINNOCK, JK AC-76B, is unique and resides in the Smithsonian Institution.
Provenance: From the Richard Jewell Collection. Earlier from Heritage's Long Beach Signature Auction of September 2006, lot 6615. Lot tag and collector tag included.
