- 1857-C Gold Dollar. Winter-1, the only known dies. AU-55 (NGC). Vivid rose-orange surfaces also exhibit a dusting of pale silver tinting as the coin rotates under a light. Both sides are satiny to modestly semi-reflective in finish, the strike impressively sharp overall for the issuing mint. From a small mintage of just 13,280 pieces, Doug Winters (2008) estimates that just 300 to 400 examples of the 1857-C gold dollar survive today. The majority of these are available in Extremely Fine and lower grades, with About Uncirculated examples exceedingly scarce.
