- Tompkins Die Stage 1/2, Rea et al. Die State a. An exciting offering for advanced type collectors and series specialists, this is a rare Choice Mint State example of the 1825 Browning-2 quarter. The quality and eye appeal are such that we unhesitatingly agree with NGC that this is a Choice Mint State coin. Lustrous and frosty, the surfaces are well preserved with only a few trivial, widely scattered handling marks that will require magnification to discern. The in-hand appearance is remarkably smooth. Sharply struck and nicely centered, both sides are further enhanced by lovely toning in multiple vivid colors. Sure to sell for a very strong bid.<p>Both known obverse dies of this issue have been classified as 1825/4/2 in the current market, replacing older classifications of 1825/4/3, 1825/3, and so on. The obverse of B-2 and B-3, represented here, is distinguished from that of B-1 by having star 13 well below the edge of Liberty's lowest hair curl. On the reverse of B-2 the denomination 25 C. is high in the field and closer to the arrow feather and branch stem than on examples of the B-3 attribution. Although plentiful in an absolute sense, examples of the B-2 die marriage are rare in Mint State, the coin offered here numbering among the finest known based on the 2010 census compiled by Rory R. Rea et al.
