- 1872-S represents the only available San Francisco "with motto" dollar, yet it still qualifies as a condition rarity given that PCGS lists only about a dozen mint-state examples. Thus, even "choice extremely-fine" examples qualify as "high grade" and this one appears to be more original than usual for the grade. A fair amount of graphite-grey patina envelopes the surface, surrounded by somewhat irregular charcoal accents. The cataloger notes some areas of roughness on the reverse, but the present corrosion seems to be limited enough to permit a straight grade.
