Flashy and brilliant, this is a highly lustrous and sharply struck example of this early five. The surfaces range the gamut from glossy to partially reflective. Struck from the BD-2 die pairing, which rates as a Rarity-4 (with 100-150 known in all grades) the second most available (overall) out of the five different marriages for the year. A few tiny, scattered ticks are seen on both sides with the aid of a glass, but none are individually distracting. Some mint made planchet adjustment marks on the reverse shows the painstaking efforts the mint employees went to ensure each coin issued had the correct weight. The bright, brilliant yellow-gold color is accented by the lustrous glow. The eye appeal is pleasing and will delight the type collector looking for a high grade early five.
PCGS 19, NGC 17. The last NGC MS64 sold in the 2015 FUN auction, realizing $44,650. The current Collectors Universe value is listed at $55,000. NGC has graded just three finer, a single 64+ and a pair in MS65 (neither of which has sold in auction since 1998!). This coin is worthy of a strong bid from the collector.
