- 1850 Pattern Cent. Judd-124c/152a, Pollock-141. Rarity-8. Proof-64 (PCGS). 1853 Pattern Cent. Judd-151, Pollock-178. Rarity-6-. MS-64 (NGC). 44.14 grains. The obverse exhibits the denomination CENT above, the date 1850 below and two rosettes at each side of what would have been a central perforation had that feature been included. The reverse exhibits a laurel wreath around another expression of the denomination as ONE CENT. Struck in a copper-nickel alloy of 74% copper, 265 nickel with a plain edge. Medallic alignment of the dies.<br /> Judd-124c was previously attributed as Judd-152a. Although the status of this type as an original or restrike is unclear, most sources suggest that these pieces are restrikes that date to no earlier than 1853. A bright satin to semi-prooflike specimen, the reverse is smooth enough to support an even higher grade. For the reverse we note light haziness and a few trivial flyspecks that confirm the near-Gem rating assigned by PCGS. The strike is ever so slightly off center, but not to the point that the border is not readily evident in all areas. A very rare type, the website uspatterns.com accounts for only two or three specimens in numismatic hands.
