- 1858 Liberty Seated Half Dollar. Proof-63 (NGC). CAC.
Peripherally toned in cobalt blue and reddish-gold, the centers are more lightly patinated in iridescent gold and silver-gray. Universally reflective in finish, both sides also sport razor sharp striking detail to the design elements. The year 1858 represents the first in which the United States Mint marketed Proof coinage to contemporary collectors on a large scale. Mintages rose accordingly, although they were still not recorded. Numismatic scholars believe that approximately 210 half dollars were struck that year for inclusion in silver Proof sets, with additional pieces made for individual distribution that may have brought the total mintage up to 300 or so pieces. Despite the best promotional efforts of Mint personnel, starting with Director James Ross Snowden, many Proof 1858 half dollars remained unsold and were released into circulation in later years. We believe that no more than 100 specimens are extant in all grades, and this is certainly one of the most visually appealing survivors for the assigned grade that we have ever offered.
