- The year 1873 was an important one in terms of the U.S. Mint; the Coinage Act of 1873 ended the 2 cent piece, three cent silver, and silver dollar; adjusted the weights of the dime, quarter, and half dollar; and introduced the Trade Dollar to facilitate trade with Asia, China in particular. The Chinese economy was silver based, and the Mexican 8 real was the trade coin of choice. Over prior years, our silver dollars made it over to China, as evidenced in Mint records, and the Trade dollars were struck specifically for international commerce with China. The mintage was only 396,635 and very few survive in high grade, fewer than you might expect, even from that limited mintage. Tied for second HIGHEST GRADED with only a SINGLE MS67 graded higher, this coin is a real PRIZE for the Trade dollar collector!
This is a Premium Quality GEM with some claims to the SUPERB GEM category housed in an old green tag holder. Well struck devices are thickly frosted and are surrounded by semi-reflective, boldly lustrous surfaces. Though somewhat subtle, the colorful toning really pops in a light, especially the lilac-slate, antique silver, and rose gold hues. The eye appeal is stupendous!
PCGS 5, NGC 1, CAC 1. This is the ONLY PCGS MS66 to ever sell in auction, realizing a record $60,000 in May 2022. The current CAC CPG value is $60,000 and the PCGS Price Guide value is $65,000. While it has never sold in auction, the MS67 would bring into the six figures, likely in the $140,000 to $160,000 range. If you are thinking of starting off your Trade Dollar set with one of the FINEST 1873s, this is your coin and will sell again for a record bid! Good luck.
