- Tompkins Die Stage 6/5, Rea et al. Die State d. Deep, vivid peripheral toning in cobalt blue and rose-russet gives way to silvery brilliance toward the centers. Sharply struck where allowed by die state, although several features are blunt to indistinct due to heavy die cracks or rust (the end of Liberty's bust, the letters STA in STATES, etc.). Plenty of softly frosted to semi-reflective luster remains to deliver further eye appeal for this lightly handled quarter.
Die Stage 5 of this reverse is unlisted in our consignor's 2008 reference on this series, but has rightly been assigned to this coin to account for the advanced state of die rust seen around the periphery from 9 to 12 o'clock, as well as in the upper left field.
Steve M. Tompkins Commentary: The noticeable die cracks on the obverse stood out immediately to me when I first saw this coin listed at auction, and confirm it as an 1836 B-3. The peripheral toning is deep and attractive, belaying time spent in an old holder of some type. The most exciting item that caught my attention, however, was the large patch of die rust on the reverse above the eagle' beak. This was something I had not seen before in an example of this variety.
