THE BIG CYPRESS COLLECTION This near-CHOICE 1854 three dollar gold piece represents the first year of issue for this odd denomination gold coin. This first year also saw the largest mintage for the series, with 138,618 examples struck. The often told explanation for the creation of this strange denomination is that postage stamps cost three cents each, and sheets of 100 were thus $3; a $3 gold piece would make buying postage easier. Struck only from 1854 to 1889, the denomination proved unpopular in circulation, but has a very dedicated following among numismatists today. A frosty, satin sheen glows boldly on both sides, highlighting the warm tangerine-infused yellow gold patina. Sharply struck devices stand out and the surfaces are free of any major marks, lines or discolorations that might take away from the outstanding eye appeal for the assigned grade. PCGS 269, NGC 276, CAC 26. The most recent example sold for $4,320 in October 2022; that figure falls in line with the PCGS value of $4,000 and the CAC CPG value of $4,500. This lovely coin will likewise likely sell in that range. A great coin for type or date collectors. Cert. Number 13072069 PCGS # 7969
