- 1835 Classic Head Half Eagle. HM-4. Rarity-6. AU-55 (PCGS).
A fully original piece with glints of rose patina to otherwise honey-olive surfaces. Mintages of gold coins blossomed after the Act of June 28, 1834 reduced their weight, and more than 371,000 half eagles were struck in 1835. The issues of 1834 and 1836 were even larger, producing plenty of $5 gold pieces that saw use in commerce. With exportation no longer profitable, these Classic Head half eagles stayed in the United States and circulated as the workhorse denomination for years. Because of this, well worn examples of the 1835 are easily obtained, but About Uncirculated and Mint State pieces are remarkably scarce. The HM-4 is a rare die pairing of the issue, simply put, and this Choice AU offering from the Fairmont Collection is surely one of the finest circulated coins extant.
Provenance: From the Fairmont Collection - CBL Set.
PCGS# 8173. NGC ID: 25RV.
