The mintage of Proof cents in 1862, not recorded at the time by Mint personnel, is estimated at 1,500 to 2,000 pieces in current editions of the <em>Guide Book</em>. Writing in his 2014 <em>Flying Eagle & Indian Cent Attribution Guide</em>, however, series expert Rick Snow provides a far more conservative estimate of 550 pieces struck. The author also observes, "The Proof issues of this year are of extraordinarily high quality." This was probably due, at least in part, to the use of fresh dies throughout the press run, for two die pairs have been identified to strike approximately 550 coins. The offered specimen boasts the exactness of strike and "good mirrors" that Snow associates with his PR1 variety. It is a glorious Gem worthy of a strong premium.
