Tompkins Die Stage 2/2, Rea et al. Die State a. <strong>Tompkins Plate Coin</strong>. Breathtakingly beautiful peripheral toning in vivid multicolored iridescence gives way to soft silver gray in the centers, apart from light color outlining Liberty's portrait and the eagle. Bold Choice EF detail overall with glints of frosty luster to surfaces that are impressively smooth during in-hand viewing.<p>Combining the obverse of the 1821 B-1 and B-6 with the reverse of the 1820 B-1 varieties, the 1821 Browning-2 is a somewhat scarce die pairing, but examples are obtainable in most grades with a modicum of patience. At the certified Choice EF grade level, the offered coin from the Tompkins Reference Collection would be very difficult to improve upon and is sure to see spiring bidding from discerning collectors.<p><strong>Steve M. Tompkins Commentary:</strong> When I purchased this beauty it was in a PCI AU-50 holder, with its great eye appealing toning swaying their graders. The PCGS grade is more accurate but the difference matters little to the desirability of this rare die marriage.
