- An eagerly sought, historic and key date issue, one for which collector demand far exceeds the supply of surviving examples. Usually seen in far lower grades, these hard working coins are also often found with significant problems. Not so here, as this example's surfaces are pleasingly smooth in hand and reflect limited and rather gentle circulation. Of course closer inspection reveals wispy marks, mostly in the expansive obverse field areas, and there are faint hairlines and some glossiness to the texture that accuracy also compels us to mention. Strike detail remains bold to sharp in the presence of overall light wear.<p>The premier issue in this mintmarked series, the 1870-CC is also the rarest. The Carson City Mint struck 54,617 half dollars in 1870, a generous total at the local level that is greater than the combined mintages for the 1870-CC quarter, silver dollar, half eagle, eagle and double eagle (total: 37,470 coins). Circulation for this issue was domestic and intense, there being no contemporary numismatic interest in early CC-Mint coinage. The vast majority of pieces were eventually lost in commerce, and of the 165 to 200 coins believed extant (per Carson City Mint specialist Rusty Goe, 2020) most are well worn, if not also impaired. Exceedingly rare above the basal EF level, the ownership of a certified 1870-CC half dollar in a grade such as EF-45 has long been the distinction of an advanced numismatic cabinet.
