- 1903 Louisiana Purchase Exposition Gold Dollar. Jefferson Portrait. Proof-66 Cameo (PCGS). This gold Commemorative issue has a net mintage of approximately 17,500 pieces, the first 100 coins struck being brilliant proofs. These special specimen strikings were distributed in large cardboard pages with certificates signed by John M. Landis and Rhine R. Freed, superintendent and chief coiner of the Philadelphia Mint, respectively. Probably about half of these coins have survived in various states of preservation, the finest examples listed at PCGS and NGC having received a numeric grade of Proof-66 or Proof-67.
A Condition Census Gem, this gorgeous coin also offers an uncommon degree of field-to-device contrast that is more pronounced on the obverse. Lovely olive-orange color throughout, with a bit of pale haziness that further confirms the coin's originality. Smooth and highly attractive, we can easily see this specimen going to a bidder that specializes in rare Commemorative coinage.
This coin is not listed on the PCGS Population Report due to a mechanical error on the insert that shows PCGS# 7482 for a non-Cameo proof of this type.
