- Tompkins Die Stage 6/3, Rea et al. Die State e. Tompkins Plate Coin. Frosty luster is nearly complete and easiest to appreciate in and around the centers, which are untoned on both sides. The peripheries are lightly toned in iridescent olive-blue and sandy-rose that provide further visual appeal. This is a sharply struck coin where allowed by die state, the eagle's head and neck typically soft for the Tompkins Die Stage 6/3 attribution. No sizable marks assail the eye on pleasing surfaces.
This minimally circulated coin so ideally represents the very late obverse die state of the 1836 Browning-1 variety that our consignor used it to illustrate Die Stage 6 in his 2008 reference on this series. The obverse is shattered with numerous crack, most quite heavy, and has an internal cud break at Liberty's brow. Fascinating!
Steve M. Tompkins Commentary: When offered this coin by Liz Coggan, then at J.J. Teaparty, I was immediately impressed. What a cool LDS example! Full cracks on both sides and late enough that the obverse die is almost bi-planer, causing the weak strike at the eagle's head on the reverse. I couldn't finalize the purchase fast enough.
