- A VERY RARE modern pattern. The mint created these Martha Washington dies to test new compositions beginning in 1965 (and they have been used in various other tests since, most notably in 1999 with the change over from the Susan B. Anthony dollar to the Sacagawea dollar). The obverse depicts Martha Washington facing right and the reverse shows a 3/4 view of Mount Vernon. Struck on a copper-nickel clad planchet as adopted in 1965 with a reeded edge, rarity unlisted in Judd, thought unique in Pollock. The J-2116 is considered Low Rarity-7, perhaps as many as a dozen are known in all grades at all services. In the 10th Edition of the Judd reference Q. David Bowers writes: "Somewhat similar to the scenario of 1942, fantasy designs were prepared with no relation to current coinage motifs, in the present instance to avoid creating 'rarities' by using regular dies." Struck in the cupro-nickel clad composition as used from 1965 to the current time. A bold luster radiates on both sides of this near-GEM example. Sharply struck and generally clean the eye appeal is quite nice for grade. PCGS 1, NGC 0. Looking at auction records for J-2116, the values are all over the place, as they exist in grades from MS61 to MS65 (all NGC). We suspect this coin will see considerable bidding when it crosses the block, as this rarity is obviously missing from many great pattern collections! Good luck. Cert. Number 47098423 PCGS # 635458
