- 1851-D Liberty Head Half Eagle. Winter 25-Unlisted. AU-55 (PCGS). CAC.
An exciting example of the issue, this is an original, CAC-approved Choice AU coin with even honey-olive color and appreciable luster on both sides. The strike is soft in isolated central and peripheral areas, yet bold for most focal features. Although a mintage of 62,710 pieces is generous for the issuing mint, the 1851-D is scarce and underrated in today's market. According to Southern gold expert Doug Winter (2003), this is the sixth rarest of 26 issues in the Dahlonega Mint five-dollar series. Far superior to the typically encountered survivor, the present example is highly recommended for inclusion in an advanced cabinet.
The reverse die from which this coin was struck appears to be unlisted in Doug Winter's reference on Dahlonega Mint gold coinage. The D mintmark is positioned just right of center over the letter E in FIVE and is joined to the branch stem.
Provenance: From the Fairmont Collection-Hendricks Set.
