- 1844 Braided Hair Half Cent. Original. B-1. Rarity-6. Large Berries. Proof-61 BN (NGC).
Boldly toned in steel-brown, subtle pale red overtones are discernible as the surfaces dip into a light. Blushes of antique gold are evident in many of the protected areas around the design elements and at the rims, certainly remnants of faded down mint color. Wispy handling marks help to explain the Proof-61 numeric grade from NGC, but most are easily overlooked in hand. Fully struck, as befits the method of manufacture, and really a handsome piece. The 1844 hails from an era of Proof-only half cent coinage in the United States Mint. Both originals and restrikes are known, although the mintages were not recorded at the time. The experts at PCGS CoinFactsaccount for only 15 to 20 originals in numismatic hands, all of which were coined from the Cohen-1 dies.
Provenance: From our (Stack's) Metropolitan New York Numismatic Convention sale of May 1973, lot 249. Lot tag included.
PCGS# 1272. NGC ID: 26ZA.
