- 1802/'1' Capped Bust Right Quarter Eagle. BD-1. Rarity-4. AU-53 (NGC). CAC. Medium golden surfaces exhibit deep orange highlights. No serious marks jump out at the viewer. From the first coinage in the denomination since 1798, and the last until 1804, and one of 3,035 examples of the date struck. A scarce variety of a date that is often selected to represent the design type in advanced U.S. gold type sets.

Numismatic Reflections by Q. David Bowers
As noted, the 1802/""1"" represents the first quarter eagle coinage in several years. While this coin is ideal for a type set, as noted, the collecting of early quarter eagles from 1796 to 1834 has become a popular pursuit for a specialist. There are no “impossible” coins, although each of them is scarce, and some of them are quite rare. Typically, it would take several years to acquire one of each date and variety listed in the Guide Book of United States Coins. It is an excellent candidate for that purpose.
