Ex Fairmont Collection, as noted on the insert. The 1902 is a famed low mintage Liberty Head double eagle, indeed the 31,140 is the lowest mintage in the 20th century for this popular type. Not only is the date scarce in CHOICE Mint State grade, but it is incredibly RARE any finer, with survivors grading MS63+ and finer numbering at exactly 20 combined between PCGS and NGC. Warm original medium honey gold coloration is delightfully lustrous and frosty with a strong satiny brilliance. The devices are nicely rendered and the surfaces show some minor marks, but they are not heavily marred or hacked up in any way. The eye appeal is quite nice. PCGS 3, NGC 0. None have sold in three years, since this coin sold. Since then, non-CAC MS63 (no +) coins have sold for more, with three selling in 2020 between $7,200 and $8,400. In MS63+ the PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $12,500, and it jumps to $45,000 in MS64. This CHOICE example is worthy of a strong bid and placement in a wonderful collection of Liberty Head double eagles. Cert. Number 35453952 PCGS # 9041
