- A gilt copper version of Longacre's wonderful half eagle design. A capped head of Liberty with three stars above the forehead, a ribbon inscribed LIBERTY flows down around her neck. Reverse shows a perched eagle, which Tom DeLorey attributes to Paquet. A very popular Rarity-6 pattern in copper, but having been gilt, this variant is likely Rarity-7 (PCGS has graded 2, NGC has graded 4 in all grades with the gilt finish). These were struck on broad thin planchets the diameter of a $10 gold piece, but with the weight of a $5 gold piece in an effort to cut down on shaving or cutting the edges and making a profit from the trace amounts of gold removed. This is the first time this design type was utilized, and used again for the Judd-283 (struck with the date 1861). A lovely example with a gilt (gold plated) copper planchet that simulates the intended gold striking (an extremely RARE example with perhaps two known). Sharply struck devices and reflective mirrored fields give this nearly CHOICE specimen a great look. There are some hairlines seen on both sides, but we also note mint striation lines that can be confused with the hairlines. We like the look of this piece a lot. PCGS 1, NGC 1. This coin sold for $7,200 in the 2022 FUN Auction in January. The Simpson Collection had a non-gilt PR63 that brought the same. PCGS CoinFacts does not have a listing for this PCGS #, nor does the PCGS Price Guide value list a value for the Gilt version of the J-272. This coin will certainly attract strong bidding from the pattern specialist when it crosses the block. Good luck. Cert. Number 39826754 PCGS # 546157
