- 1839-O Liberty Seated Dime. No Drapery. Fortin-106. Rarity-3. Large O. MS-64 (NGC).
A frosty and lustrous example of this popular early New Orleans Mint issue, here with intense bull's eye toning. The centers are deep and rich orange, peach, and crimson, giving way to concentric halos of violet, neon blue, and pale gold toward the borders. Sharply struck and very appealing. The history and rarity of the 1839-O dime are very similar to those of its identically dated half dime counterpart. The dime was produced to the extent of 1,291,600 pieces, circulated widely throughout the pre-Civil War South, and has yielded mostly worn and/or impaired survivors. If anything the dime is even more conditionally challenging than the half dime, and is scarce even in EF and AU grades. Advanced bidders will also experience considerably more difficulty locating a Mint State 1839-O dime; Q. David Bowers (2016) estimates that just 50 to 62 pieces are extant. We offer here a particularly attractive near-Gem, a significant addition to any cabinet.
