- 1885 Gold Dollar. Proof-67 Cameo (NGC). CAC. Rich orange-gold with boldly frosted motifs and deeply mirrored fields that form an exacting cameo contrast. Physically choice and aesthetically appealing with exceptional eye appeal. Just two examples of the date have been graded finer than the present piece by NGC within the Cameo designation. From a proof mintage for the date of 1,105 pieces.

Numismatic Reflections by Q. David Bowers
The proof mintage of 1,105 pieces is misleading and has little or nothing to do with numismatics. As recorded in my study, The Guide Book of United States Gold Dollars, late in the issue of that series coins of this denomination were desired by jewelers, who made them into necklaces, brooches, bracelets, and the like, but the Mint refused to sell them to jewelers, and it seems--a little bit of supposition here--that large numbers of proofs were ordered instead. Far and away the rarest proof gold dollar of the era was 1889, but it is also the 19th- century gold proof coin with far and away the highest mintage!
