- 1874 Shield Nickel. Proof-66+ Cameo (NGC). CAC. A flashy platinum-white specimen, the fields are incredibly reflective and provide a strong contrast against the more satiny design elements. This is an impressive strike and condition rarity for the issue, a premium quality Gem with captivating eye appeal. One of just 700 Proofs struck for the issue, and among only the handful of specimens to emerge from the dies with such pronounced field to device contract. Certified population data suggests that the 1874 is the seventh rarest of the twenty popularly identified Proof issues in the Shield nickel series, including the Rays and No Rays variants, as well as the 1878/9, as separate issues.
