From the Chester Roche Collection. Like most of the later date gold dollars, the 1872 had a low mintage, of only 3,500. As typically seen, there is a bold reflection to the luster. Sharply struck devices stand out against the smooth fields. Both sides have a rich, multicolored iridescent toning, showing off some icy blue/teal at the peripheries and deep burnt-orange and deep rose on towards the centers. The eye appeal is certainly unique and will delight any collector of toned gold. PCGS 2, NGC 3. The last PCGS graded coin realized $4,994 in February 2013. The current PCGS value is listed at $6,000 and keep in mind that the last MS66 sold for $14,950 (nearly seven years ago). We anticipate strong bidding for this uniquely toned GEM. Cert.
