- THE BOYLSTON COLLECTION, PART IV An EXCEEDINGLY RARE date. A sensational GEM, tied with just one other for FINEST GRADED at PCGS! While the 73-CC Arrows half dollar gets more attention, this is a major rarity in its own right as well! The 73-S was struck from a single die pair, that produced the 228,000 for circulation. All feature a small S mintmark. This GEM specimen has a bold and brilliant mint luster that verges on the Prooflike, with semi-reflective flash that pops from below a dusting of iridescent toning. Pearly silver and accents of clear gold really delight the eye and attest to the originality of this GEM. The devices are expertly struck up, as usually seen for the date. The eye appeal is very pleasing. As in 1853, a change in the weight of silver coins was signified by arrows placed at the date. In 1873, the weight of the half dollar was increased by 0.9 grains to weigh exactly 12.5 grams total. The branch mint issues were lower than the Philadelphia mint, but that said, 228,000 is not a low mintage, but due to extensive circulation, high grade survivors are RARE, with NONE FINER than the presently offered MS65. PCGS 2, NGC 3. This coin is the ex Gardner coin that sold for $28,200 in October 2014. The current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $40,000 and with NONE FINER, we expect this GEM will delight anyone working on a top tier set of Seated Liberty half dollars. Good luck. Cert.
