1883-O Liberty Eagle. Winter Variety One, the only known dies. AU-53 (NGC). Hands down the rarest New Orleans Mint Ten-Dollar gold Eagle, the 1883-O has a paltry mintage of just 800 pieces. This is the lowest delivery recorded for any mintmarked issue in the long-running Liberty series, and it is third-lowest total achieved behind those mintages obtained by the business strike 1875-P and 1876-P. Writing in the 2006 edition of the book <em>Gold Coins of the New Orleans Mint: 1839-1909</em>, noted Southern gold specialist Doug Winter opines that only 35-45 examples of this issue have survived in all grades. The issue is virtually unobtainable in Mint State (we know of only a single MS-61 at NGC and no Uncs at PCGS), and Winter's estimate for properly graded AUs is a mere six-to-eight pieces.<br /> &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The foregoing discussion makes clear the absolute and condition rarity of this extremely important 1883-O Liberty Eagle. This issue is not known for having a particularly good quality of strike and, indeed, the present example is a tad soft in isolated areas. Even so, the outward appearance is suitably bold, and wear is light and commensurate with the assigned grade. Awash in khaki-gold color, the surfaces still retain appreciable "flash" to the luster despite being somewhat scuffy from commercial use and other light&nbsp;handling. The darling of the Solomon Collection coins being offered in this sale, and a coin that represents a fleeting bidding opportunity for another collector specializing in rare-date classic gold.
