- 1883-O Liberty Eagle. Winter Variety One, the only known dies. AU-53 (NGC). Hands down the rarest New Orleans Mint Ten-Dollar gold Eagle, the 1883-O has a paltry mintage of just 800 pieces. This is the lowest delivery recorded for any mintmarked issue in the long-running Liberty series, and it is third-lowest total achieved behind those mintages obtained by the business strike 1875-P and 1876-P. Writing in the 2006 edition of the book Gold Coins of the New Orleans Mint: 1839-1909, noted Southern gold specialist Doug Winter opines that only 35-45 examples of this issue have survived in all grades. The issue is virtually unobtainable in Mint State (we know of only a single MS-61 at NGC and no Uncs at PCGS), and Winter's estimate for properly graded AUs is a mere six-to-eight pieces.
The foregoing discussion makes clear the absolute and condition rarity of this extremely important 1883-O Liberty Eagle. This issue is not known for having a particularly good quality of strike and, indeed, the present example is a tad soft in isolated areas. Even so, the outward appearance is suitably bold, and wear is light and commensurate with the assigned grade. Awash in khaki-gold color, the surfaces still retain appreciable "flash" to the luster despite being somewhat scuffy from commercial use and other light handling. The darling of the Solomon Collection coins being offered in this sale, and a coin that represents a fleeting bidding opportunity for another collector specializing in rare-date classic gold.
