- (t) CHINA. Chang Hsueh-liang/Officer Training Silver Medal, ND (1936). PCGS Genuine--Mount Removed, AU Details.
L&M-965A; Kann pl. 192; KMX-M535; WS-0112A; Barac-232 (though listed as instituted 1928). Diameter: 33mm. Obverse: Bust facing slightly left in military attire; Reverse: four character legend within wreath. Edge: Mounted clasp at the top, with light beige ribbon attached with blue stitched lettering. Given the presence of hiragana on the ribbon, it clearly does not appear to have an original connection to the medal and, given Chang's antipathy toward the Japanese, could have been placed there after the fact in jest of his opposition. Lightly toned, with a mostly gray nature and some subtle olive hints. Very little evidence at all of handling is noted.
Chang Hsueh-liang (Zhang Xueliang) was an instrumental figure in ending the Chinese Civil War, accommodating communist rule, and presenting a united front in opposition to the Japanese occupation. As such, he was one of the great heroes of Chinese 20th century history. This type was presented to graduates of Chang's officer training school in Xian in June 1936.
Estimate: $3,000 - $5,000.
