- 1824/1 Capped Bust Half Dollar. O-101a. Rarity-2. MS-65 (NGC). There are perhaps no varieties in the Capped Bust Half Dollar series that enjoy a greater following among specialists than the overdates. This popularity probably stems from the fact that these coins are vivid illustrations of conditions in the early U.S. Mint, where the technological and economic conditions of the time necessitated that dies remain in use for as long as possible. This policy was followed even if the date of the coins being struck was different from that on the calendar, or if Mint employees had to modify older (perhaps previously unused) dies for employment in later years. Such practices would be foreign to employees in the modern Mint.<br /> An exceptionally attractive representative of the variety, this no-questions Gem is virtually devoid of outwardly noticeable abrasions. This feature allows ready appreciation of full, glistening mint luster and sharp, powerfully impressed devices. These technically sound surfaces are bathed in warm, original, attractive patination that includes well-blended shades of silver-gray, tannish-russet, orange, pale-orange and golden-blue colors. Overton's Condition Census list (65; 65; 65; 65; 64) establishes this coin as a member of the select group of finest-known 1824 O-101a Halves.
