- Tompkins Die Stage 2/1, Rea et al. Die State a. Rea et al. Plate Coin. A lustrous and frosty BU example that is lightly toned in pale silver gray and sandy-gold iridescence. Several of the obverse stars are blunt, ditto for a couple of the olive leaves on the reverse, but otherwise the strike detail is razor sharp. In the absence of all but a few tiny marks, faint hairlines and slight muting of the luster explain the MS-62 grade from PCGS.
This scarce variety of the 1837 quarter was struck before the 1837 B-4, with which it shares its obverse die. The reverse of the 1837 Browning-5 appears only in this pairing. The present example does not appear to be included in the 2008 Tompkins census, but it is included in the 2010 Rea et al. census, in which it is ranked CC#4 with a grade of 62.
Steve M. Tompkins Commentary: I purchased this coin from Dick Osburn at the 2004 ANA Convention, when it certified MS-64 by PCI. I foolishly traded the coin to Rory Rea for an error coin and some cash in 2005. I regretted it for years. Fast forward to 2019, and Phil at Eye Appealing Coins listed it under their new purchases. Although it was now in a PCGS MS-62 holder it was obviously my old coin. I quickly talked to Phil and worked out a deal. I told myself that I would not sell it again unless my whole collection went with it, and here we are.
