Not a Shipwreck Find
1865-S Liberty Head Double Eagle. MS-63+ (PCGS).
A boldly colored honey-gold example that is bathed in frosty, handsome mint luster. Boldly to sharply struck overall with exceptional Choice Mint State quality that would do justice to the finest double eagle set.
The mintage for this issue is 1,042,500 pieces, one of the largest production figures for the denomination during the Civil War and Reconstruction eras. These circulated freely on the West Coast, where most became well-worn in a relatively short time. The 1865-S was once considered an extreme rarity in Uncirculated condition. David W. Akers in his 1982 double eagle reference book accounted for just three listings of Mint State examples in a survey of more than 400 major auction sales. This all changed in 1999 when gold coins found on the wreck of the S.S. Brother Jonathancame on the market. Nearly 600 Mint State 1865-S double eagles were recovered from that shipwreck. Wait, there's more! Later, the S.S. Republictreasure yielded 939 pieces. All of these treasure coins were quickly snapped up by eager buyers -- testimony to the depth and breadth of the rare coin market.
For more discerning double eagle enthusiasts, however, patience continues to be the order of the day as market appearances for non-shipwreck examples of the 1865-S remain exceedingly rare. This is just such an example, and it is far superior to the typical S.S. Brother Jonathanor S.S. Republiccoin available in today's market. Worthy of the strongest bids.
