PeterShireman, All coins are CAC
The dollar and the half are amazing PR67 coins with subtle colors mixed in the toning, and very extremely nice surfaces. Original and intact proof sets from before 1900 are few and far between, and when such sets come to market they are subject to being broken up. 1890 also happens to be a small mintage for proof sets.
When both my kids were born in 1990 I thought it would be neat to obtain a proof set from 100 years before. My plan was to slowly build the set a coin at a time and try to match them. However, my other pursuits, including the mint state Barber half set, kept me away from doing it. Then one day, voila, Harry bought this set as one of three wrapped in original mint-issued tissue papers, this one preserved for 122 years, and I knew I had to have it. The coins were True Viewed when Harry sent them in for grading, and the images are out of this world. I could find coins from the cent to the quarter that are higher grade to provide higher numerical grades, but I like the fact that this set has been unmolested and together for over a century, so I plan to leave it as is.
