1822 Mint Set with Gold

Even though the mint reported 100,000 Dimes struck in 1822, its scarcity suggests not all may have born that date. In thirty years, PCGS has certified only 91 specimens (only about three per year) and three quarters of these have been in grades of Fine, or lower. Only about two dozen exist in VF or better, and while the prices in these grades are not prohibitive, locating one will not be easy as they appear infrequently to say the least. The Cent, Quarter and Half should present little difficulty this year. Including the gold for 1822 requires only one coin, the Half Eagle. Unfortunately, that one coin is one of the top three rarest and most valuable regular-issue US coins. Two of the three known pieces are permanently impounded in the Smithsonian Institution, leaving one on the open market. Last sold in the Eliasberg Sale in 1982 for the astonishing sum of $687,500, It is due to be sold sometime in 2016 or 2017, so get out your checkbooks. You'll also need a long-lost multimillionaire Uncle as it is expected to bring almost ten times that price!
