Liberty Head $2-1/2 Gold with Major Varieties, Circulation Strikes and Proof (1840-1907)

This is one of the longest-lived series in all of numismatics, beginning more than two decades before the Civil War and lasting into the 20th century. While the circulation strikes are not impossible, even considering the ultra-rare 1854-S key date, the proofs are another story. Proofs were struck in extremely limited quantities in the early years, with most of the mintages being less than ten pieces per year. The 1841 date was struck only in Proof, with no examples minted for circulation. The later years saw an increase in mintages, but even so, the coins are rare. Completion of this set could take a life time and once done would make you into a numismatic immortal.
