MINTAGE: 38,578,000 Number of obverse dies: 74 Average coins per die: 521,324 This is one of the more common dates of the 19th Century issues. It is equivalent in mintage to the 1880, 1881 and 1883 and should be valued similarly. Only in high grade is this coin difficult to locate. The best variety of the date is the S6 which was unknown in 1992 when the first edition of Flying Eagle and Indian Cents was published. The initial discovery in 1996 caused a sensation among variety collectors. It remains a very rare and desirable variety. A broken 2 digit punch was used on a few dies. On most the break at the top of the 2 was repaired. One die, S2, shows the unrepaired break. The number of dies reported this year is much lower than the similar mintage dates 1880 (129) and 1881 (94). It is unclear if die life was somehow extended or there was some other reason for this curious situation
