From the Experts at PCGS
The National Numismatic Collection, now at the Smithsonian Institution, was formed in 1838 with coins set aside by Mint employee, Adam Eckfeldt. New coins were added each year as they were made, but no attention was paid to mintmarks until much later. That’s why you won’t find an 1876-CC Twenty Cent piece or an 1870-S Seated Liberty Silver Dollar in this collection. However, you will find six of the Ten Most Famous U.S. coins, including a 1913 Liberty Nickel, all three classes of the 1804 Silver Dollar, two(!) Ultra-High Reliefs, two 1880 Stellas (both the Flowing Hair and Coiled Hair types). It’s a collection worthy of our nation’s pride.

The best coins are always behind glass...if only the Smithsonian would display their collection, or at the very least digitalize it. As it is, getting them to create a small, permanent exhibit required huge public pressure and millions of dollars.
Awesome
