The mint in Charlotte, North Carolina began operations in 1838 along with the mints at Dahlonega, Georgia and New Orleans, Louisiana. Like the Dahlonega mint, Charlotte struck only smaller gold coins, and suspended operations in 1861 with the advent of the Civil War. None of the Charlotte coins can really be called common, but the toughest coins in this small set will be the Type II $1 Gold coin struck in 1855 only, and the Classic Head Quarter and Half Eagles of the late 1830s with the mintmark shown above the date on the obverse.
