The severe shortage of specie during and shortly after the Civil War gave rise to several low denomination coins made from base metals. The copper two cent piece, and the nickel three and five cent pieces all made their appearance between 1864 and 1866. The tiny three cent silver piece was originally designed to purchase a postage stamp and had been around since 1851. A set of these "odd" denomination coins really transports one back to the mid-19th century, where one can imagine the relief many merchants must have felt having "small change" again. Because there are no 18th or early 19th century coins here, and because quantities minted were high at their introduction, none of these coins will be too difficult or expensive to acquire, unless you're looking for the absolute top grades.
