Although these diminutive issues were only struck from 1849 until 1889 and were not readily acceptable by the populace, today they are very desirable with type and date collectors. Easily completed in lower Uncirculated grades, only the Type 2 is difficult to locate in higher grades. With only three types for the 41 years they were issued, one can complete this set at almost any coin show or auction. This three piece set still makes an impressive display, as gold coins disappeared from circulation in 1933 and the average person today has probably never even seen a gold dollar. Both Proofs and circulation strikes are eligible for this set, but the Type 3 in Proof is really the only one that is feasible to use as both the Type 1 and 2 in Proof are prohibitively rare.
