Stacks Notes: LOT DESCRIPTION 1794 Liberty Cap Half Cent. C-8. Rarity-5. High-Relief Head. VG-8 (PCGS). CAC. Only about 35 examples are known of this elusive variety. This pleasing example displays a light milk-chocolate color overall. Unusually smooth surfaces with no apparent corrosion, only a single ancient mark is noted across Liberty's cheek extending into the right field. The coin is easily identifiable because it is from Die State IV, which has a reverse die break running from the rim through the second T in STATES and terminating in the wreath. This attractive coin should be seriously considered by any half cent variety specialist. Provenance: Ex Furnace Run Collection. PCGS# 35060. NGC ID: 2223. Stacks Notes: LOT DESCRIPTION Classic 1793 Wreath Cent Ever-Popular One Year Design Type 1793 Flowing Hair Cent. Wreath Reverse. S-11C. Rarity-3-. Lettered Edge. EF-40 (PCGS). This is a handsome, high grade circulated example of a perennially popular large cent design type. Both sides are warmly toned in copper-brown, with glints of light olive-copper evident in isolated areas. The strike is well centered and otherwise sharp for the assigned grade, the reverse border devoid of beading from 6:30 to 11 o'clock. The surface texture is satiny and generally hard, with a few minor planchet flaws concentrated in the lower left obverse field. A few wispy handling marks in the right obverse field and on the reverse around the word STATES are noted for accuracy, although the appearance is pleasingly smooth overall for a lightly circulated early copper. Breen Die State III. Copper for this variety was supplied by Greenleaf & Watson, and the planchets are apt to show laminations or other natural flaws, as evident on the obverse of the present example. Production of Sheldon-11C was intermingled with that of S-11B (Lettered Edge, Double Leaf). The reason the Mint abandoned the vine and bars edge device in favor of a lettered edge is unknown, especially since its expression ONE HUNDRED FOR A DOLLAR is another statement of the denomination, which is already given twice as part of the reverse design of the Wreath cent (ONE CENT and 1/100). From the first year of the regular issue U.S. large cent series, and a one year design type, all 1793 Wreath cents are eagerly sought. In original, attractive and problem free PCGS-certified Extremely Fine preservation, this piece is particularly desirable for type or variety purposes. Provenance: From our sale of the William L. Buxton Collection, August 2021 ANA Auction, lot 4006. PCGS# 35477. Click here for certification details from PCGS. Glorious aqua and pink patina and absence of relevant contact put this piece in the top drawer for eye appeal and quality. Population: 28 in 66 (3 in 66+), 0 finer. CAC: 8 in 66, 0 finer (6/22). Heritage Comments: 1796 Draped Bust Dime, AU55 First-Year Issue, JR-1 1796 10C JR-1, R.3, AU55 PCGS. Despite a 22,135-piece Guide Book mintage, the 1796 date is surprisingly available leading many researchers to believe additional 1796-dated dimes were struck in 1797. The JR-1 variety is the most available of seven 1796 die marriages. It is one of the most recognizable, too, with a large cud partially obscuring star 1 on most examples. The cud formed early on and, while often identified as a late die state, only a few 1796 JR-1 coins lack the anomaly. This Choice About Uncirculated example displays a ragged, prominent cud at the first star and a blurry, arc-like die crack curving in front of Liberty's face to the neck and shoulder. A horizontal die crack beneath the eagle's right (facing) wing confirms the middle-to-late die stage. Slight central weakness is characteristic of the later strikes. Tan-gold toning is prominent at the margins and lightens toward the centers, supported by pleasing mint luster that remains throughout the lightly abraded surfaces. Population (all 1796 varieties): 25 in 55, 85 finer (12/23). Sunshine Rare Coins (Easton Connecticut) Comments: 1839 O Seated Dime No Drapery F-106a Large O, Cobweb Reverse PCGS MS-65 CAC Toned Finest Known for the variety Fortin Comments on F-106a: 1839-O Variety 106a Obverse 4.2: Die Crack From Liberty's Head Through Star 12 Reverse E.2: Shattered Cobweb Reverse Obverse 4.2 Reverse E.2 Obverse Diagnostic Point(s) Reverse Diagnostic Point(s) Comments: Obverse 4 exhibits a boldly repunched Star 5 and comes fairly well struck even though the reverse die experiences severe degradation. As Reverse E approaches its near terminal die state, Obverse 4 exhibits a die crack from Liberty's head through Star 8, the cap and Stars 9 to 12. Another die crack starts at the rim below the left base and proceeds up through the rock into the left field. There is also a die crack from the base under Liberty's foot that moves towards the lower shield. Reverse E is nearly always seen with some levels of die cracks which eventually lead to the spectacular cobweb shaped shattered reverse. This die pair saw significant usage as evidenced by the available amount of circulated examples with varying degrees of reverse die cracks. The plate coin presents Reverse E in a very late die state. It has completely shattered leaving heavy die cracks from UN(I)TED to the wreath, then along the bottom of S(TATES OF A)MERICA. This die crack then re-enters the right wreath down to the bow knot. The die cracks covers the entire circumference of the reverse. Variety 106a is highly sought after in higher grades by variety specialist due to its spectacular appearance. Plate Coin: G. Heritage Auctions Description: 1853 Arrows and Rays Quarter, MS64 Sought-After One-Year Type Coin 1853 25C Arrows and Rays MS64 PCGS. The lack of circulating silver coinage due to the huge influxes of California gold was resolved by the lower-weight Arrows and Rays coins, but nearly all of the quarters circulated. In general, the larger-denomination an Arrows (and sometimes Rays) silver coin is, the more likely it is to have circulated. The certified populations for the 1853 Arrows and Rays quarters include a handful of MS67 pieces, but those populations thin out drastically at or above the Gem grade level, making an MS64 coin an optimal grade for collectors. This is an oyster-gray example that is sharply struck in all areas. No obvious marks are seen on either side. From The Wildwood Collection. (Registry values: P5) (PCGS# 5426)

Heritage Auctions Comments: 1835 O-101 Half Dollar, MS64 Colorfully Toned and Smooth 1835 50C O-101, R.1, MS64 PCGS. Splendid ocean-blue, plum-red, and sun-gold toning endows this lustrous and uncommonly attractive Choice Capped Bust type coin. The fields and eagle appear pristine, and the portrait displays only minor contact. The strike is good, although not complete on a few star centers. While the present coin is just shy of earning Condition Census status, its eye appeal competes with any examples of the variety. Ex: ANA Signature (Heritage, 8/2021), lot 3814. Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 24FZ, Variety PCGS# 39927, Base PCGS# 6168, Greysheet# 194026) Weight: 13.48 grams Metal: 89.24% Silver, 10.76% Copper
Coast Coin Comments: Reeded Edge. These were among the first coins struck with the new steam press installed at the Philadelphia Mint in 1836. Approximately 1200 pieces were struck. This is one of the better surviving examples with a solid strike, no heavy contact marks and wonderful original surfaces. A nice golden and light dove-gray core gives way to a touch of peripheral teal as well as some golden-orange in the protected areas of the design. An important piece of American numismatics. Just 8 have graded numerically finer at PCGS.
PCGS MS62 CAC. Stacks description: 1838 Capped Bust Half Dollar. Reeded Edge. HALF DOL. GR-11. Rarity-1. MS-62 (PCGS). CAC. Satiny surfaces are uncommonly smooth for the assigned grade. Lightly toned in a blend of pearl gray and pale gold, this handsome example also offers sharp to full striking detail for the central design elements. As one of the most common die marriages of the issue, the 1838 GR-11 is a popular type candidate for the collector seeking a single example of the brief Capped Bust, Reeded Edge half dollar design of 1838 to 1839. In an absolute sense, however, Mint State survivors of this type are scarce, especially from a market availability standpoint.

PCGS MS62. Heritage Auctions Description: 1853 50C Arrows and Rays, WB-101, MS62 PCGS. The mintage for this single-year type was a substantial 3.5 million half dollars. The dies used to strike this MS62 survivor must have been at the end of their usable life, as both sides are heavily cracked and clashed. The centers are strong, while detail softens around the rims. Cobalt-blue and reddish-violet toning encircles much of the obverse, leaving the rest of this coin brilliant. (NGC ID# 24JJ, Variety PCGS# 572085, Base PCGS# 6275)
