Rare in any grade, this 1871 proof half sovereign, bearing die number 1, is in superlative condition, and one of the few to appear on the market in the last decade. In fact, a quick check of our records indicates that just two coins have been exhumed and offered to the market since 2012. The coin on offer here is the single-finest graded by PCGS and NGC, and is the plate coin in the Wilson and Rasmussen standard reference, English Pattern, Trial and Proof Coins in Gold.
George III Mint Error - Obverse Brockage gold 1/2 Sovereign 1817 AU55 PCGS, KM673, S-3786. An extremely rare error type for the gold issues of George III's reign. Though one occasionally sees brockages in silver, this is not so for the Sovereigns and Half-Sovereigns of the period, rendering this barely circulated example as one of the highest scarcity. A full incuse mirror impression of the obverse design is displayed to the true reverse, while ample aurous luster and sharp detail confirm that this specimen was pulled from circulation not long after entering exchange.
George III gold 1/2 Sovereign 1817 MS66 PCGS, KM673, S-3786, Marsh-400. Astonishingly fresh and remarkably well-preserved, that such a piece has been long recognized for its exquisite quality is confirmed by its older generation holder. Indeed, even under close inspection, hardly a flaw worthy of note can be discerned, the fields instead resounding with satin originality and just a hint of die polish. Notably, this piece is situated alongside just one other in this peak grade out of over 204 seen between NGC and PCGS combined.

George IV gold 1/2 Sovereign 1821 MS64 PCGS, KM681, S-3802. A fantastic example of this conditionally challenging 1/2 Sovereign issue, displaying highly fluid and shimmering golden luster, enhanced by a framing amber tone that grips the legends and transforms subtly into the yellow-gold color of the central fields. The strike is full, only further positioning this near-gem as a highly compelling type candidate.

Victoria gold Proof 1/2 Sovereign 1887 PR66 Ultra Cameo NGC, KM766, S-3869, W&R-362. A thoroughly outstanding representative of this scarce Proof, entirely meriting of its gem ultra cameo status--the fields appearing nearly jet-black from all angles with a pronounced silhouette matte frost atop the devices. A lovely gem, with simply magnificent watery surfaces and a fantastic cameo effect against the chiseled and heavily frosted devices. Seldom seen at this elite level of preservation, this is an all-around great coin that we suspect will find itself in the collection of a true connoisseur. Ranking very near the peak of certified specimens, we note that only two PR67's have been certified to-date. Ex. Murdoch Collection (Sotheby's April 1903, Lot 495 [part])

Victoria gold Proof Sovereign 1893 PR66 Deep Cameo PCGS, KM785, S-3874, W&R-341. A highly popular type representing the final major bust design in the long-running Victorian sovereign series, this superb Proof representative takes conditional preservation to the near-peak of what has been seen for the issue. Serving as potent mirrors, the fields abound with deep reflectivity, while both Victoria's portrait and the reverse St. George motif rise in high profile and shine by virtue of the heavy golden frost which graces their features. Quite impressive in this technical caliber, and among the best we have had the privilege to offer.

Victoria gold Proof 2 Pounds 1893 PR65+ Deep Cameo PCGS, KM786, S-3873, W&R-294, Marsh-T36 (R). Mintage: 773. Impeccably well-preserved, and very near the peak of recognized quality for the issue, with none yet exceeding PR67. Generously frosted against depthless, jet-black mirrors, even close scrutiny reveals hardly a singular flaw to be found. Most likely, the grade is held just shy of PR66 by some scattered copper spots to the obverse and the subtlest hint of haze behind her veil. Needless to say, an elite presentation, and the single finest we have yet offered.

Edward VIII Abdication Silver Medal, 1936. PCGS MATTE SPECIMEN-64 Gold Shield. BHM-4277; Eimer-Unlisted. By L. E. Pinches. Mintage: 100. Obverse: KING EDWARD VIII, crowned and robed bust right, wearing Chain of the Garter; Reverse: ASCENDED / THE THRONE / JAN 20TH 1936 / ABDICATED / DEC 10TH / 1936 in six lines; all within wreath. Reverse: Legend and dates in six lines within wreath. Deep steel gray surfaces with an incredible matte nature. Some minor spotting is evident on the reverse, but is not distracting to the eye. An interesting commemorative from this shocking abdication. A VERY RARE and alluring Gem, this piece presents a departure from a collection of coronation medals, in that, rather than a coronation, it instead "celebrates" an abdication. As Edward had fallen in love with American divorcee, Wallis Simpson, and since marriage to a divorced individual was not allowed, he chose instead to relinquish the crown, with it passing to younger brother, Albert. Despite the event chronicled, this type is clearly an absolute inclusion into any top coronation medal set or collection of issues relating to the Duke of Windsor--the former Edward VIII. Provenance: From the Duke of Lansing Collection.

Victoria gold 1/2 Sovereign 1861/0-SYDNEY XF45 NGC, Sydney mint, cf. KM3 (overdate unlisted), Fr-10a, Marsh-386A (R3). From an original low mintage of 183,500, an unknown number of coins were minted with the 1/0 overdate, which in this example, is well observable under magnification. A brief study in comparable sales reveals a limited few of these overdates appearing on the marketplace. Beyond this issue, which we handled in January of 2023, the previous one we sold was a PCGS VF25 in January 2014, selling for $2,820. This specimen is conditionally vastly superior, and in fact, is the finest-graded in the NGC census with only one piece sharing the same technical grade in the PCGS population. An offering that admits honest wear from active circulation and projects the typical greenish tinge due to the naturally occurring silver in the alloy used in Australia. Incidentally, this is the primary reason why these pieces are so rare, as they got melted down for their higher than face value metal content. Ex. Heritage Auctions #3106 (January 2023, Lot 33349)
