1938 5C MS66FS PCGS #84000

A blue-violet patina dominates both sides of this premium gem with yellow and orange highlights at the peripheries. While there are some minor distractions that limit the grade to MS66, the focal areas of this coin are incredibly clean including a very smooth cheek and jawline. The coin is well struck with 5 full steps and would have a good shot at the + designation upon resubmission. In late May 2010, David Lawrence Rare Coins offered "The Monticello Collection" of Jefferson Nickels for sale in auction. Many of the pieces in the collecton were midgrade gems worth less than $100, but there were some keynote coins in the collection as well. This was the first noteworthy coin listed. Not terribly rare with over 200 available coins, but demand is high because it is a first year of issue coin with a reverse hub that was only used for the first two years of the series. DLRC uses substandard scans in their listings and even though they listed the coin as a color coin with a DLRC rating of [3/*****], I was still able to obtain the coin 20% back of PCGS Price Guide.

1939 5C Reverse of 1940 MS66 PCGS #94003

Outstanding toning in shades of peach, tangerine, and lavender blanket both sides of this premium gem with super clean surfaces for the assigned grade. The die wear has made the details a tad mushy but created tremendous luster at the same time.

1942-D 5C MS67FS PCGS #84014

This magnificent coin was cracked from an old fatty NGC MS66 holder and spent a decade in my album collection before I submitted it to PCGS. Scintillating luster and beautiful orange gold toning makes this full step coin one of the most attractive in the entire collection.

1946-D/D 5C D/Inverted D FS-501 (031) MS66 PCGS #38507

One of the highest graded examples of this rare variety, the inverted mintmark can be seen easily with the naked eye. Thick lustrous golden rose patina envelops both sides of this premium gem. The preservation of the surfaces is exceptional but extensive die wear is most evident under the reverse lettering. As is so often the case, full steps are precluded by bridging of the 4th & 5th steps under the third pillar.

1948-S 5C MS66FS PCGS #84036

This coin is the second coin that was part of the Monticello Collection offered by DLRC in May 2010 with the 1938 being the first. There is actually a curious story behind my bid on this coin. With a few days left in the auction, a high end coin collector e-mailed me asking about the Monticello Collection. This collector is in the top ten in total points in the NGC registry He told me that he considered me a connoisseur of Jefferson Nickels and wanted my opinion of the collection. He also stated that he was not bidding but was curious about what I thought. I told him that the collection had some real winners and some dogs. I also told him that I considered the steal of the entire auction this 1948-S. If you look closely at the very poor DLRC scan, you will notice hints of color on the obverse of the coin. Based on experience, I knew that this coin most likely had beautiful pastel iridescent rainbow toning. Fortunately, the terrible DLRC scan ensured that I would not have to pay a premium price for the toning and ended up paying 60% of PCGS Price Guide.
